In a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the paints and coatings industry, AkzoNobel has announced a collaboration with BASF to incorporate significantly reduced carbon footprint raw materials into its decorative paints production across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).

The agreement will see AkzoNobel utilizing BASF鈥檚 biomass balanced (BMB) ingredients in its paint formulations. This innovative approach allows AkzoNobel to maintain the superior quality and performance of its existing paint products without necessitating any alterations to their current manufacturing processes. This results in at least 5% reduction of carbon footprint in the current paint product.

BASF achieves this reduction by replacing conventional fossil-based feedstock used in the production of its ingredients with renewable resources such as bio-naphtha and biomethane. This substitution is managed through a certified mass balance approach, verified by an independent third party. This certification ensures the transparent and traceable allocation of renewable resources throughout the value chain. As a result, AkzoNobel can now procure BASF鈥檚 acrylic binder, a crucial component in decorative paints, with a substantially lower carbon footprint.

Wijnand Bruinsma, AkzoNobel鈥檚 Director of Sustainability, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, 鈥淚ntegrating BASF鈥檚 BMB ingredients into our higher volume consumer products will help us achieve a significant overall impact in terms of carbon footprint reduction. Our partnership means the carbon footprint of any paint we produce using the BMB approach will be cut by at least 5% to begin with, compared with the same formula produced using 100% fossil-based material.鈥

Echoing this sentiment, Dr. J枚rg Niebergall, Senior Vice President, Dispersions Europe, at BASF, added, 鈥淲e鈥檙e proud to support AkzoNobel accelerate its sustainability agenda. Through our broad portfolio of sustainable and low carbon products, we鈥檙e enabling the company to offer its customers products with a lower carbon footprint. We also provide data, tools and expertise, empowering AkzoNobel to make informed decisions. The collaboration demonstrates the strong commitment of both companies to a more sustainable future.鈥

AkzoNobel in the UK is already gearing up to launch its upgraded Dulux Easycare range in the second quarter of this year, featuring these reduced CO2 ingredients. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first instance of the company utilizing certified mass balanced products to replace fossil fuels with renewable raw materials in an acrylic binder.

Bruinsma further highlighted the collaborative nature of tackling Scope 3 emissions, noting, 鈥淲e can鈥檛 drive the reduction of Scope 3 carbon emissions by ourselves, that鈥檚 why collaboration is so important. Partnerships like this play a key role in making change happen quicker and teaming up with BASF will help us create a scalable approach to more sustainable solutions.鈥
