Arkema鈥檚 Boretto site earns ISCC PLUS certification, advancing Mass Balance sustainable waterborne resins for global low-carbon applications.

Arkema, a global leader in specialty materials, has announced that its Boretto, Italy facility has successfully achieved ISCC PLUS certification for its waterborne acrylic resins. This milestone aligns with Arkema鈥檚 broader Mass Balance roadmap, a strategic initiative aimed at promoting sustainable production and enhancing the environmental performance of its products. The certification enables a Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) reduction of up to 100% at the Boretto site, reinforcing Arkema鈥檚 commitment to sustainability and supporting customers in their transition toward greener solutions across various markets.

The Boretto facility manufactures a comprehensive range of Mass Balance solutions, which include waterborne resins containing up to 95% bio-attributed carbon, translating to 50% bio-attributed content by weight in the final products. These sustainable solutions cater to multiple sectors, such as architectural coatings, adhesives, consumer goods, e-mobility, and other specialty applications, allowing Arkema鈥檚 customers to advance their sustainability goals while maintaining high-performance standards.

Neil Tariq, General Manager Coating Resins Europe, emphasized Arkema鈥檚 dedication to improving production methods and supporting industry-wide carbon reduction objectives. He stated, 鈥淭he certification in Boretto strengthens our ongoing efforts to make a positive environmental impact and enhances the sustainability footprint of our customers鈥 offerings in the region.鈥

Arkema鈥檚 commitment to ISCC PLUS certification is not limited to the Boretto facility. Several other Arkema waterborne resin sites have already achieved this recognition, including locations in Saint Charles, Louisiana (US), Zwickau, Germany (EMEA), and Changshu, China (Asia). These certifications are integral to Arkema鈥檚 larger Mass Balance strategy, which encompasses multiple technologies and product types, covering a full spectrum of bio-attributed specialty resins and additives. The roadmap spans high solids, waterborne, UV-LED-EB, and polyester powder materials, underscoring Arkema鈥檚 comprehensive approach to sustainable materials.

By extending ISCC PLUS certification to Boretto, Arkema not only enhances its global sustainability portfolio but also provides customers with verified eco-friendly solutions that reduce reliance on fossil-based feedstocks. This achievement reflects the company鈥檚 broader vision of integrating sustainability into its core operations, delivering products that meet both performance and environmental expectations, and actively contributing to the global effort to lower carbon emissions in the coatings and specialty materials industries.

Through such initiatives, Arkema continues to lead the transition toward a more circular and bio-attributed chemical industry, demonstrating that high-performance specialty materials can coexist with sustainability and environmental responsibility.
