BASF鈥檚 Rheovis Additives Now Made with Bio-Based Ethyl Acrylate, Cutting Carbon Footprint

BASF鈥檚 Rheovis Additives Now Made with Bio-Based Ethyl Acrylate, Cutting Carbon Footprint

William Faulkner 11-Jun-2025

BASF, a global leader in additives for the coatings industry, has successfully transitioned to using bio-based ethyl acrylate (EA) in the production of its Rheovis range at its manufacturing sites in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Bradford, United Kingdom. This shift marks a significant step toward reducing the environmental footprint of its products while maintaining their high-performance standards.

The updated Rheovis line now contains a biogenic carbon content of up to 35%, as certified by ASTM D6866-18 using 14C-traceable analysis. In comparison to fossil-based versions, the bio-based alternatives exhibit up to 30% lower product carbon footprints (PCF), supporting sustainability targets throughout the coatings value chain.

鈥淭he switch to bio-based feedstock underlines BASF Additives鈥 commitment to enabling formulators in their green transition while ensuring continued supply reliability and efficiency,鈥 said Sylvain Pascal Huguenard, vice president of global business management for additives at BASF. 鈥淭hrough BASF鈥檚 optimized production processes and our integrated Verbund approach, we can further reduce our PCF and strengthen sustainability across the board.鈥

The chemical composition and technical performance of the Rheovis庐 products remain unchanged, ensuring that customers receive the same quality and reliability while benefiting from improved sustainability.

Joachim Burger, head of sales for Additives EMEA at BASF, emphasized the company鈥檚 broader vision: 鈥淲ith sustainability at the core of our innovation, the upgraded Rheovis庐 range will empower our customers to develop more eco-friendly formulations. We鈥檙e proud to support formulators on this journey and remain committed to shaping the future together.鈥

In addition to reformulating existing products, BASF has expanded its Rheovis庐 portfolio with the launch of two new HASE (Hydrophobically Modified Alkali Swellable Emulsion) rheology modifiers鈥擱heovis庐 HS 1101 and Rheovis庐 HS 1153. Both are free of added biocides and have been specifically designed with higher biogenic content to enhance both performance and sustainability.

BASF also offers the option to apply its Biomass Balance (BMB) approach, which allows further PCF reductions by attributing bio-based feedstocks to products within its certified production system. This flexibility helps customers improve the renewable share in their formulations and reduce dependency on fossil-based materials.

With its evolving portfolio of bio-based solutions, BASF continues to lead in supporting a circular economy and offering customers viable pathways to meet growing regulatory and environmental demands.

BASF is committed to creating chemistry that supports a sustainable future. The company aims to become the preferred chemical partner for customers driving the green transformation. BASF integrates economic success with environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Its core business segments include Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, and Nutrition & Care, while its independent business units are grouped under Surface Technologies and Agricultural Solutions.
