Chemetall launches Gardolene庐 D, the world鈥檚 first chromium- and fluoride-free copper foil passivation, boosting battery efficiency, sustainability, and EU compliance.
Chemetall, the global surface treatment division of BASF Coatings and a leading innovator in metal surface technologies, has launched Gardolene庐 D, the first-ever chromium- and fluoride-free passivation solution for copper foils. This breakthrough represents a major milestone in sustainable manufacturing, providing exceptional corrosion resistance and enhanced copper foil performance for use in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, energy storage systems (ESS), and energy generation applications.
The new Gardolene庐 D series introduces a sustainable, high-performance alternative to conventional chromium (VI)-based treatments, addressing both environmental and performance challenges in the fast-growing battery sector. As the global transition to clean energy accelerates, demand for efficient and durable batteries in EVs, consumer electronics, and renewable energy systems continues to rise. Recognizing this shift, Chemetall developed Gardolene庐 D to meet the European Union鈥檚 new Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542), which enforces strict requirements on hazardous materials, carbon footprint declarations, and digital battery passports. By 2027, only compliant batteries will be permitted in the EU market鈥攎aking chromium-free technologies essential for future-ready battery production.
A key technical advantage of Gardolene庐 D lies in its ability to improve surface energy on copper foils, allowing stronger adhesion of anode active materials and reducing electrical resistivity. These features collectively enhance battery efficiency and power retention. Rigorous laboratory testing confirmed that batteries using copper foils treated with Gardolene庐 D deliver up to 6% longer lifespans after 1,000 charge cycles at 25掳C compared to those using traditional chromium-based coatings.
From an environmental perspective, the introduction of Gardolene庐 D 6701 and Gardolene庐 D 6702 marks the first time a chromium-free and fluoride-free passivation system for copper foils has been commercially available worldwide. These products significantly minimize ecological impact across the battery value chain while remaining fully compatible with existing production equipment. They are suitable for both electro-deposited and rolled annealed copper foil substrates used in EV and energy storage batteries. The innovative chemistry also enhances heat and corrosion resistance, ensuring more stable and reliable copper foil performance.
Frank Naber, Senior Vice President, Global Surface Treatment at BASF Coatings, emphasized the broader industry implications: 鈥淎s electric mobility and renewable energy continue to expand, the need for sustainable and high-performance surface treatment technologies becomes critical. Gardolene庐 D sets a new benchmark鈥攃ombining improved battery performance with greater sustainability. It perfectly embodies our commitment to innovation and our promise to help customers 鈥榚xpect more.鈥欌
Arjan Termaten, Head of Global Technology at Chemetall, added, 鈥淭his pioneering technology is the result of close collaboration between our research teams and customers worldwide. Gardolene庐 D ensures stable copper foil properties, superior electrode conductivity, and compliance with evolving global standards, giving manufacturers a future-proof, sustainable alternative to conventional passivation.鈥
With the launch of Gardolene庐 D, Chemetall solidifies its leadership as the first surface treatment provider to deliver a chromium- and fluoride-free global solution for copper foil pretreatment. The technology is now available worldwide, enabling battery manufacturers to achieve higher performance, longer lifetimes, and greener production鈥攚ithout additional investment in equipment.
