Maersk Tankers Brings Technical Management In-House to Bolster VLAC Operations

Maersk Tankers is bringing its technical management in-house, a move aimed at enhancing its service for Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs) and other vessels, and is expected to conclude in 2026.

Maersk Tankers announced today its decision to bring technical management in-house, a move designed to enhance expertise and service delivery, particularly for its burgeoning fleet of Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs). This shift underscores Maersk Tankers' commitment to closer integration of technical know-how with commercial operations, especially as the company ventures further into the gas carrier segment and embraces new, greener fuel technologies. The transition, which will also encompass the broader tanker fleet to achieve scale, is anticipated to be completed during 2026.

The decision comes at a pivotal time for Maersk Tankers, which has been steadily increasing its engagement in the gas carrier sector. A significant driver for this move is the company's recent investment in 10 VLACs, notably those equipped with ammonia dual-fuel options. These advanced vessels are crucial for supporting future engine and fuel development, aligning with the industry's push towards decarbonization.

Tina Revsbech, CEO of Maersk Tankers, emphasized the criticality of this strategic pivot. "We are building 10 Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs), and providing in-house technical management is critical to deliver the service our customers require for new technologies such as dual-fuel ammonia," she stated. Revsbech further explained the rationale behind including the entire tanker fleet in this transition: "To achieve scale, we include tankers as well." This comprehensive approach aims to create a robust and efficient technical management structure that can support the diverse needs of Maersk Tankers' operations.

This latest development marks a change from the company's previous setup where Synergy Group was responsible for the technical management of Maersk Tankers' vessels. Maersk Tankers and Synergy Group are now actively collaborating to ensure a smooth and professional transition of operations.

Revsbech reiterated the core objective of the in-house move: "As we engage further in the gas carrier segment, we require a setup that brings technical expertise closer to our commercial business 鈥 and at scale."

Overseeing this significant transition will be Tommy Thomassen, who currently serves as Chief Operating Officer at Maersk Offshore Wind. Thomassen, a former Chief Technical Officer at Maersk Tankers, brings a wealth of experience to this role. He will guide the planning and implementation of a future-fit technical setup for Maersk Tankers, while continuing to manage his responsibilities at Maersk Offshore Wind. His dual role underscores the cross-company collaboration within the A.P. Moller Group and the strategic importance placed on this internal restructuring.
