Metso will supply a EUR 32 million iron ore sintering plant to SAIL鈥檚 IISCO Steel Plant, integrating emission-cutting EOS technology.

Metso has secured a significant order to supply its third iron ore sintering plant to the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) for the IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) located in Asansol, West Bengal. This order, valued at approximately EUR 32 million, was recorded under Metso鈥檚 Ferrous business during the third quarter of 2025. The Ferrous business, currently undergoing divestment, continues to focus on delivering advanced and sustainable steel production technologies.

The new sintering plant will have a production capacity of 2.67 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and forms a vital component of SAIL ISP鈥檚 ambitious 4 MTPA crude steel capacity expansion project. Metso鈥檚 scope of work covers detailed engineering, supply of key equipment, and supervision during installation and commissioning phases. The project marks another milestone in strengthening India鈥檚 domestic steel manufacturing capabilities while aligning with national sustainability objectives.

A core feature of this project is Metso鈥檚 proprietary Emission Optimised Sintering (EOS) technology, which is designed to enhance environmental performance and energy efficiency. This advanced system is expected to significantly cut solid fuel usage and lower carbon dioxide emissions by more than 54,000 tonnes annually. Once completed and operational by 2029, the plant will play a crucial role in SAIL鈥檚 broader strategy to transition toward cleaner, low-carbon steelmaking practices.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Surajit Mishra, Director-In-Charge of SAIL鈥檚 Burnpur and Durgapur Steel Plants, stated, 鈥淭ogether, we are taking a decisive step towards low-carbon steelmaking.鈥 His remarks highlight SAIL鈥檚 proactive efforts to integrate sustainable technologies into its production infrastructure, reinforcing its position as a leading contributor to India鈥檚 green industrial transformation.

Echoing this sentiment, Attaul Ahmad, Vice President of Metso鈥檚 Ferrous & Heat Transfer business line, said, 鈥淲e are pleased to partner with SAIL on this landmark project, which underscores our shared commitment to advancing sustainable steel production. Incorporating our EOS technology will help SAIL ISP strengthen its environmental and energy efficiency initiatives.鈥

Metso and SAIL share a long-standing collaborative relationship, particularly in the development of traveling grate sintering plants. Over the years, Metso has successfully delivered four sintering plants to various SAIL facilities, building a reputation for reliable performance, technological excellence, and environmental responsibility.

Metso鈥檚 traveling grate sinter technology ensures consistent, high-quality pellet output with optimized fuel efficiency and reduced operational costs. The system not only guarantees robust productivity but also significantly lowers energy consumption and emissions, aligning with both partners鈥 goals to drive the global steel industry toward sustainability and resource efficiency.
