Premix, LyondellBasell, and Maillefer have launched a recyclable polypropylene-based power cable system for MV and HV applications. The collaboration integrates advanced materials, compounding, and manufacturing technologies, offering a sustainable alternative to XLPE. Key benefits include processing efficiency, recyclability, and system compatibility, supporting the power industry鈥檚 evolving infrastructure needs.
Premix, LyondellBasell (LYB), and Maillefer have partnered to introduce a technically advanced and recyclable polypropylene (PP)-based power cable system designed to meet the evolving needs of the medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) cable industry. The new solution integrates high-performance PP materials, specialized compounding, and cutting-edge cable manufacturing technology, offering an innovative alternative to conventional cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) systems.
This joint initiative combines each company鈥檚 core strengths to deliver a reliable, high-performance, and sustainable cable solution. The PP-based system is designed for both cable insulation and semiconductive screens, ensuring compatibility and enhanced functionality throughout.
Premix contributes its expertise in conductive polymers through its PRE-ELEC庐 PP18220 compound, specifically developed for MV and HV semiconductive cable screens. This compound delivers excellent carbon black dispersion, consistent conductivity, and a flexural modulus matched to PP insulation. This alignment supports seamless integration within the overall system.
鈥淎t Premix, we are proud to contribute our deep understanding of conductive materials to help build a smarter, more sustainable cable ecosystem,鈥 said Tuomas Kiikka, business development director at Premix Group.
LyondellBasell supports the system with its Catalloy Hifax CA 7910A, a PP-based thermoplastic polyolefin (PP-TPO) insulation material. Known for its mechanical robustness and thermal resistance, Hifax CA 7910A offers excellent consistency and ease of processing, making it highly suitable for next-generation cable insulation solutions.
鈥淭his collaboration is a great example of how polymer innovation can unlock real value for manufacturers by combining performance with recyclability,鈥 said Michael Berger, senior director of specialty polymers at LyondellBasell.
Maillefer contributes advanced manufacturing capabilities with its high-efficiency extrusion lines. Their technology 鈥 including both horizontal and catenary continuous vulcanization (CV) systems 鈥 ensures precise temperature control and optimized cooling. These features minimize shrinkback and provide a uniform insulation layer and superior cable core quality.
鈥淢aillefer鈥檚 technology is a critical enabler of this solution. We are excited to support our customers and partners in developing competitive cable systems with processing equipment that ensures performance and reliability,鈥 said Mikko Lahti, research and development director at Maillefer.
The joint solution offers a forward-looking alternative for manufacturers seeking sustainability, processing speed, and system compatibility. Key benefits include:
