QatarEnergy awards Samsung C&T EPC contract for 4.1 MTPA CCS project, advancing large-scale carbon capture and sustainable LNG operations.

QatarEnergy has officially entrusted Samsung C&T Corporation with the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) responsibilities for a major carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) initiative, aimed at supporting QatarEnergy鈥檚 LNG production facilities located in Ras Laffan Industrial City. This strategic project is set to capture and securely store up to 4.1 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, positioning it among the largest CCS undertakings worldwide. Through this project, Qatar is reinforcing its role as a global leader in the deployment of large-scale carbon capture technologies, while simultaneously demonstrating its commitment to delivering sustainable and environmentally responsible energy solutions.

His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QatarEnergy鈥檚 President and CEO, described the contract award as a critical step forward in the country鈥檚 carbon management strategy. 鈥淭his landmark initiative significantly enhances our carbon capture and sequestration capabilities, bolstering QatarEnergy鈥檚 reputation as a dependable provider of cost-effective, lower-carbon energy solutions,鈥 he said. He further emphasized that all future LNG expansion projects in Qatar will integrate CCS technologies, with a long-term objective of capturing more than 11 million tons of CO2 annually by 2035.

Minister Al-Kaabi highlighted the project鈥檚 alignment with QatarEnergy鈥檚 broader sustainability and environmental objectives. 鈥淥ur CCS projects are a key component of QatarEnergy鈥檚 strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They will play a major role in supporting Qatar鈥檚 National Climate Change Action Plan. Collaborating with Samsung C&T Corporation enables us to ensure the successful execution of this world-scale CCS facility, reflecting our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable energy production.鈥

This 4.1 MTPA CCS project builds upon QatarEnergy鈥檚 ongoing portfolio of carbon management initiatives. The company launched its first CCS project in 2019 with an initial capacity of 2.2 MTPA. In addition, two current CCS projects are underway to support the North Field East and North Field South LNG expansion developments, with capacities of 2.1 MTPA and 1.2 MTPA of CO2 respectively. Collectively, these efforts exemplify QatarEnergy鈥檚 proactive approach toward large-scale carbon capture, positioning the country as a front-runner in sustainable energy innovation while addressing global climate challenges.

By continuing to integrate CCS technologies across its LNG operations, QatarEnergy is demonstrating a long-term commitment to environmental responsibility, emission reductions, and leadership in the transition toward a lower-carbon energy future. The partnership with Samsung C&T Corporation reflects QatarEnergy鈥檚 dedication to leveraging world-class engineering and project execution expertise, ensuring that the nation鈥檚 ambitious carbon reduction targets are achieved efficiently and effectively.
