Samsara Eco and KBR Collaborate to Develop Enzymatic Nylon 66 Recycling Facility

KBR Inc. announced it will partner with biotechnology company Samsara Eco to help design a pioneering enzymatic recycling plant for plastics and textiles, expected to be completed in early 2028.
Samsara Eco鈥檚 proprietary technology uses engineered enzymes and artificial intelligence to break down plastics and synthetic fibers into their base building blocks, or monomers. This process is designed to enable continuous recycling of materials that are typically considered non-recyclable, such as nylon 6,6, mixed fibers, and dyed textile blends. Unlike conventional recycling methods, the technology aims to remanufacture plastics without loss of quality and with a reduced carbon footprint.
The plant represents a significant step toward achieving circularity in the plastics industry. Samsara Eco's innovation is positioned to help reduce landfill waste and support brand partners in sourcing sustainable materials. The company is already collaborating with leading brands such as lululemon to replace virgin inputs with low-carbon, recycled alternatives. Last year, Samsara Eco introduced the first-ever enzymatically recycled nylon 6,6 product and launched a limited-edition jacket made from enzymatically recycled polyester in partnership with lululemon.
Under the agreement, KBR will complete a pre-front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) for the recycling facility by the end of the second quarter of 2025. Following this, KBR will deliver a full FEED engineering package for a commercial-scale plant designed to process 20,000 metric tons of nylon 6,6 annually.
