Sulzer has signed a key equipment supply agreement with Emirates Biotech to provide proprietary technology for the world鈥檚 largest polylactic acid (PLA) production facility, currently under development in the United Arab Emirates. This latest milestone builds upon the licensing agreement signed by both companies in December 2024, reinforcing their long-term strategic partnership and marking the project鈥檚 transition from planning to execution.

Under the new agreement, Sulzer will manufacture and supply a comprehensive suite of proprietary equipment for the integrated PLA production process. This includes advanced systems for lactide formation, purification, and polymerization鈥攃ritical stages in the transformation of lactic acid into PLA. As a renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable material, PLA offers a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics, aligning with global efforts to reduce environmental impact and carbon emissions.

Sulzer, a recognized leader in separation and polymerization technologies, will deliver equipment designed to enhance operational efficiency, minimize energy consumption, and maximize product output. These systems are purpose-built to support Emirates Biotech鈥檚 ambitious goal of producing environmentally friendly plastics at industrial scale, helping to advance the circular economy in the region and beyond.

鈥淲e are proud to further advance our ongoing collaboration with Emirates Biotech on this pioneering project,鈥 said Tim Schulten, division president of Sulzer Chemtech. 鈥淥ur PLA technology has been selected to ensure reliable, high-efficiency production while contributing to global decarbonization efforts. This project is a testament to bold, solution-oriented investment that can drive real change in how materials are produced and used.鈥

Marc Verbruggen, CEO of Emirates Biotech, emphasized the significance of this development. 鈥淪igning this equipment supply contract with Sulzer represents a decisive step forward for our company,鈥 he said. 鈥淲ith the core technology now secured, we are entering a critical phase of execution. This is a major commitment, both strategically and financially, as we establish a world-class PLA facility that will help anchor the region鈥檚 transition to sustainable materials.鈥

Samsung E&A will serve as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the project. The company will oversee the integration of Sulzer鈥檚 proprietary technology into the broader infrastructure of the plant, including utility systems, storage facilities, and supporting site services.

Construction of the PLA facility is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2025, with full operations anticipated by early 2028. Once completed, the plant will not only represent a significant industrial achievement but also play a pivotal role in supporting global sustainability goals through the production of next-generation bioplastics.
