thyssenkrupp Uhde has successfully commissioned its EnviNOx庐 emission reduction system for Covestro Polymers (China) Co. Ltd. at the nitric acid facility in Shanghai Chemical Industry Park. The advanced technology is designed to significantly cut emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and nitrous oxide (N2O), contributing to Covestro鈥檚 broader environmental goals. The facility is part of Covestro鈥檚 global production network for high-performance polymers used in applications such as polyurethanes, polycarbonates, and raw materials for paints, coatings, adhesives, and sealants.
The commissioning of the EnviNOx庐 system represents a key step in Covestro鈥檚 mission to achieve full circularity and reach climate neutrality for its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2035. Michael Huang, general manager of Covestro鈥檚 integrated site in Shanghai, praised the system鈥檚 outstanding performance and seamless implementation, calling the project a testament to the company鈥檚 environmental commitment.
Nadja H氓kansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, emphasized the project鈥檚 significance in advancing climate solutions in China. She noted that the installation reflects thyssenkrupp鈥檚 ability to deliver innovative technologies that address urgent environmental challenges. The EnviNOx庐 system has already been installed in more than 60 facilities worldwide and contributes to reducing over 24 million metric tons of CO2-equivalent emissions annually.
EnviNOx庐 is specifically engineered to achieve near-zero NOx emissions and dramatically lower N2O levels. The system鈥檚 adaptable design allows it to be integrated into existing tail gas systems in chemical plants as a tertiary abatement solution. When paired with secondary emission control technologies, such as BASF's high-performance catalysts, emission reductions can exceed 99 percent, bringing N2O and NOx levels to under 1 part per million.
The system for Covestro includes a proprietary reactor, BASF-manufactured catalysts, and integrated control systems. This combined setup has enabled Covestro to cut N2O emissions by more than 200,000 metric tons of CO2-equivalents annually from its nitric acid operations.
Detlef Ruff, senior vice president for chemical catalysts and adsorbents at BASF, highlighted the collaborative effort with thyssenkrupp Uhde and the ongoing advancements in catalyst technology, aimed at supporting clients in their sustainability goals.
Originally designed for nitric acid plants, the EnviNOx庐 technology is also used in other industrial settings, including caprolactam production facilities. With more than 20 years of operational history and continuous improvements, the system has proven to be a durable and adaptable solution for emission control. The Covestro installation marks the third EnviNOx庐 deployment in China, supporting national efforts to reduce industrial pollution.
thyssenkrupp Uhde leverages its unique technological expertise and decades of global experience in engineering, procurement, construction, and servicing of chemical plants. The company develops innovative processes and solutions that support a more sustainable future, helping customers across nearly all sectors of the chemical industry achieve long-term success.
