TotalEnergies Corbion and Useon have entered a strategic alliance aimed at accelerating the development and global adoption of EPLA (Expanded PLA) molded products鈥攁n innovative, sustainable foam solution crafted from Luminy庐 PLA bioplastics. This collaboration merges cutting-edge materials with advanced manufacturing technology to introduce a high-performance alternative to conventional foams.
EPLA is a bio-based, industrially compostable material that is designed for molded applications such as protective packaging, insulation, and food service products. Made using TotalEnergies Corbion鈥檚 Luminy庐 PLA and Useon鈥檚 proprietary direct bead foaming technology, EPLA offers a new circular solution in the foam market, traditionally dominated by non-renewable expanded polystyrene (EPS) products.
Hao Ding, Global Marketing Director at TotalEnergies Corbion, emphasized the synergy between the two companies: 鈥淯seon鈥檚 excellence in foam extrusion, paired with the sustainability and functionality of Luminy庐 PLA, delivers a powerful new product range. EPLA is proof that strong partnerships can create real climate-positive solutions without sacrificing performance.鈥
EPLA foam combines lightness, durability, and excellent protective qualities, making it ideal for use in cold-chain logistics, food containers, and general packaging. One of its most compelling features is its end-of-life profile鈥攊t breaks down into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass under industrial composting conditions, making it a smart choice for businesses aiming to meet growing environmental and regulatory expectations.
Chen Zhiqiang, CEO of Useon, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, 鈥淓PLA provides companies with a high-performance foam option that aligns with the global push toward sustainability. Partnering with TotalEnergies Corbion empowers us to expand the reach of molded PLA foams. Our shared goal is to reshape what鈥檚 possible in foam applications through sustainable innovation.鈥
As part of their agreement, TotalEnergies Corbion and Useon will jointly promote EPLA technology worldwide. Their collaboration extends beyond marketing, encompassing product development, market intelligence sharing, and innovation in application design. This partnership underscores both companies鈥 commitment to accelerating the transition toward renewable materials and circular economy practices.
The collaborative effort will take center stage at Chinaplas 2025, where EPLA foam will be prominently featured. Visitors to Useon鈥檚 booth (5D41) will witness live demonstrations showcasing the production and versatility of EPLA molded foam using direct bead foaming technology.
By combining their expertise, TotalEnergies Corbion and Useon are setting a new benchmark in sustainable materials, offering industries an eco-conscious alternative without compromising on quality or performance.
