Toyo Engineering鈥檚 urea synthesis and granulation technology selected for BUA Chemicals鈥 two-train, 8,000 tpd world-scale urea plant in Nigeria.
Toyo Engineering Corporation has announced that its proprietary urea synthesis and granulation technology has been selected for what is set to become the world鈥檚 largest urea production facility, planned by BUA Chemicals Limited, one of Nigeria鈥檚 leading chemical fertilizer manufacturers. The ambitious project will feature two parallel production trains, each designed with a capacity of 4,000 tons of granulated urea per day, positioning the plant as a landmark development in the global fertilizer industry.
At present, the project is in the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, a critical stage that defines the technical and economic framework of the facility before full-scale engineering and construction commence. As part of this phase and with a view toward full license provision, Toyo Engineering Corporation will act as the licensor for both urea synthesis and granulation technologies. In this role, Toyo will deliver the Process Design Package (PDP), which forms the technical backbone of the project.
The PDP is a comprehensive set of engineering documents that includes process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), detailed equipment specifications, and other essential technical data. These documents collectively serve as the foundation for detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the plant, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operations once the facility becomes operational.
Toyo Engineering鈥檚 urea technology is widely recognized and extensively deployed worldwide. To date, the company has licensed its proprietary urea synthesis and granulation technologies to more than 110 urea plants across the globe, reflecting decades of experience and continuous technological refinement. In Africa specifically, Toyo鈥檚 technology has already been adopted for four large-scale projects with the same world-class capacity of 4,000 tons per day per line. These successful references in the region demonstrate the robustness, scalability, and reliability of Toyo鈥檚 solutions under diverse operating conditions.
The selection of Toyo鈥檚 license for the BUA Chemicals project is therefore a direct result of this proven track record. The ability to deliver stable, high-capacity urea production while maintaining efficiency, product quality, and operational safety was a key factor in the decision-making process. For Nigeria, the project represents a significant step toward strengthening domestic fertilizer production capacity, reducing import dependence, and supporting agricultural productivity.
Globally, fertilizer demand is expected to continue rising, driven by population growth, increasing food consumption, and the need to enhance crop yields. In response, numerous fertilizer plant projects are being planned and developed worldwide. Within this context, Toyo Engineering, as a leading licensor of urea technology, remains committed to supporting food security initiatives through advanced process technology and engineering expertise.
By contributing its proprietary urea synthesis and granulation technologies to this major Nigerian project, Toyo aims to play an important role in stabilizing fertilizer supply in Nigeria and across the African continent. The project underscores Toyo鈥檚 long-term commitment to sustainable industrial development and its continued efforts to address global agricultural and food supply challenges through proven engineering solutions.
