U.S. biodiesel imports fell sharply again in March, continuing a downward trend that has persisted through the first quarter of 2025, according to data released May 6 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture鈥檚 Foreign Agricultural Service.
The U.S. imported 14,991.9 metric tons of biodiesel and biodiesel blends containing 30 percent or more (B30 and above) during March. This figure represents a significant month-over-month decline from the 21,964.9 metric tons imported in February and a dramatic year-over-year drop from 116,141.1 metric tons imported in March 2024.
Canada was by far the largest supplier of U.S. biodiesel imports in March, accounting for 14,923.6 metric tons. Other countries supplied only small volumes, with France contributing 50.3 metric tons and Belgium-Luxembourg providing 16.2 metric tons. The total value of biodiesel imports for March was $12.32 million, down from $17.49 million in February and sharply lower than the $164.4 million recorded in March of last year.
In contrast, U.S. biodiesel exports showed a modest increase month-over-month but remained significantly below year-ago levels. The U.S. exported 15,050.4 metric tons of biodiesel and biodiesel blends in March, up from 7,849.6 metric tons in February. However, this was well below the 45,891.8 metric tons exported in March 2024.
Four countries received U.S. biodiesel exports in March. Canada was the leading destination, importing 11,205.1 metric tons. Peru followed with 3,385.3 metric tons, and Germany received 450.4 metric tons. The total export value for March reached $15.08 million, an increase from $7.85 million in February, yet far below the $65.75 million recorded during the same month last year.
Cumulatively, U.S. biodiesel exports for the first quarter of 2025 totaled 50,321.9 metric tons at a value of $68 million. These figures are down from the 93,149.8 metric tons and $132.71 million recorded during the first three months of 2024.
Biodiesel imports for the first quarter of 2025 totaled 46,879.3 metric tons, with a combined value of $40.25 million. By comparison, the U.S. imported 464,342.8 metric tons of biodiesel in the first quarter of 2024, valued at $653.59 million鈥攁 stark indication of the shrinking import market.
The continuing decline in biodiesel imports, both in volume and value, may reflect changes in federal and state energy policies, rising domestic production, market conditions, or broader global trade dynamics. Meanwhile, despite fluctuations, U.S. biodiesel exports remain modest, with Canada serving as the dominant trading partner in both directions.
