The maize prices in the US market have increased in January due to temporary transport disruptions which has tightened the Pacific export availability. Early January saw WASDE (The World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates) lift national maize production on yield revisions, extending a record-large crop, while mid-January an Arctic front froze stretches of the upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers and pushed more grain onto constrained rail networks. The locomotive availability was tight through the month which stretched the schedules at interior shuttle loaders. Late January, Pacific terminal stocks were drawn down as elevator turn-round accelerated to meet vessel line-ups, and active export interest propped up basis and FOB offers out of Los Angeles.
The other export markets of maize have positively supported the values, with Mexico and Japan driving demand for FOB Los Angeles maize shipments and kept the Pacific basis premiums firm. The...
