Worley wins Energinet EPCM contract for Denmark鈥檚 hydrogen backbone, advancing green energy connectivity, infrastructure development, and Europe鈥檚 low-carbon transition goals.
Worley has secured a significant contract from Energinet to deliver Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) services for Phase 1 of Denmark鈥檚 ambitious hydrogen infrastructure initiative, known as the Danish Hydrogen Backbone pipeline. The agreement, which spans five years, marks a major step forward in the development of a national hydrogen transmission network designed to support Europe鈥檚 transition toward cleaner energy systems.
The Danish Hydrogen Backbone project is considered a critical component of Denmark鈥檚 long-term energy strategy. It aims to connect large-scale green hydrogen production鈥攇enerated primarily from renewable sources such as wind and solar power鈥攖o key demand centers across Europe, particularly Germany. By enabling cross-border hydrogen transport, the project will play a vital role in strengthening regional energy security while also supporting decarbonization efforts across multiple industries.
As part of its EPCM responsibilities, Worley will oversee the development of approximately 41 kilometers of new hydrogen pipeline infrastructure. In addition, the project includes the conversion of around 89 kilometers of existing natural gas pipelines to accommodate hydrogen transport. This hybrid approach not only optimizes existing assets but also reduces overall project costs and environmental impact. The scope also includes the development of associated infrastructure necessary to ensure the efficient and safe operation of the hydrogen network.
The project represents a major milestone for both Denmark and the broader European hydrogen economy. By establishing a dedicated hydrogen transmission backbone, Denmark aims to position itself as a key player in the emerging hydrogen market, facilitating the integration of renewable energy into industrial and energy systems across the continent.
According to Jan Narvestad, Senior Vice President for the Nordics at Worley, the contract underscores the company鈥檚 strong capabilities in delivering complex energy infrastructure projects. He emphasized that being selected by Energinet highlights Worley鈥檚 expertise and commitment to supporting the energy transition. Narvestad noted that the project aligns perfectly with Worley鈥檚 strategic focus on enabling low-carbon solutions and advancing sustainable energy systems.
Execution of the project will be led from Denmark, supported by Worley鈥檚 extensive global network. Teams from across the Nordic region, as well as specialists from the United Kingdom and India, will contribute their expertise to ensure successful delivery. This collaborative, international approach is expected to enhance efficiency, innovation, and project execution standards.
Narvestad further highlighted that the combination of regional knowledge and global experience allows Worley to effectively support clients developing next-generation energy infrastructure. He stressed that projects like the Danish Hydrogen Backbone pipeline are essential for achieving large-scale decarbonization and that Worley is committed to delivering them safely, efficiently, and collaboratively.
The commissioning of the Danish Hydrogen Backbone pipeline is currently targeted for completion by late 2030. Once operational, it is expected to play a transformative role in enabling hydrogen as a key energy carrier in Europe, supporting both climate goals and long-term energy resilience.
