Product Description
M-Cresol (meta-cresol) is an aromatic organic compound belonging to the cresol family, classified as a methylphenol. It is typically obtained as a component of coal tar or petroleum-derived phenolic streams and can also be produced synthetically through processes such as toluene sulfonation or phenol methylation. Commercial M-Cresol is supplied as a clear to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic phenolic odor and is known for its high purity requirements in downstream chemical synthesis.
M-Cresol exhibits strong solvency, moderate acidity, and notable antimicrobial activity, making it a versatile chemical intermediate. Its ability to dissolve resins, dyes, and organic compounds, coupled with its thermal stability and reactivity toward alkylation, esterification, and oxidation, supports its wide industrial value. The compound is primarily used as a precursor in the production of antioxidants, fragrances, UV stabilizers, and specialty resins.
Due to its functional attributes, M-Cresol finds extensive applications across pharmaceuticals (e.g., antiseptic formulations and excipients), agrochemicals, polymer stabilizers, dyes, and vitamin E (tocopherol) synthesis. It also serves as a critical raw material for manufacturing electronic chemicals, high-performance resins, and metalworking additives. Its role as a reactive intermediate and high-strength solvent positions M-Cresol as an essential product in fine chemicals and advanced materials manufacturing.
