Aemetis Biogas Secures Landmark CARB Approvals, Doubling LCFS Credits with Ultra-Low Carbon RNG

It is set to approximately double the number of Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) credits generated by these digesters, boasting an impressive average carbon intensity of negative 384.

Aemetis, Inc., a leading renewable natural gas (RNG) and renewable fuels company, today announced a pivotal achievement with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) granting provisional pathway approvals under the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) for seven of its dairy digesters. These approvals, effective as of January 1, 2025, are set to revolutionize the company's LCFS credit generation, with the seven approved pathways boasting an extraordinary average carbon intensity (CI) of negative 384. Individual carbon intensities range from an impressive negative 327 to an even more remarkable negative 419.

This significant regulatory milestone marks a substantial boost for Aemetis Biogas, the subsidiary responsible for the construction and operation of these advanced digesters. The negative carbon intensity values underscore the profound environmental benefits of Aemetis's dairy-based RNG, indicating that the production process not only avoids emissions but actively removes greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. This is achieved by capturing methane, a potent greenhouse gas, that would otherwise be released from dairy waste.

This doubling of credits is a testament to the efficacy of Aemetis鈥檚 technology and its commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The immediate effect of these approvals is particularly beneficial, aligning perfectly with the LCFS first quarter reporting deadline of June 30, 2025. The January 1, 2025, effective date ensures that Aemetis can promptly realize the increased LCFS credit quantity for its RNG produced during the first three months of the year, providing an immediate financial uplift.

Looking ahead, Aemetis is poised for continued growth and expansion in the renewable energy sector. With eleven dairy digesters currently operational and a four-dairy cluster digester nearing completion, the company has additional pathway filings in progress.

Beyond its pioneering work in dairy RNG, Aemetis is actively engaged in a diverse portfolio of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects designed to further reduce carbon emissions. The company's Keyes ethanol plant is implementing a mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) system, anticipated to generate an impressive $32 million of increased annual cash flow starting in 2026.

Further solidifying its commitment to environmental stewardship, Aemetis is advancing the Riverbank carbon sequestration project, with plans to inject 1.4 million tons of CO2 per year underground. The company's vision also extends to the aviation and transportation sectors, with a 78 million gallon per year sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel plant already securing Authority To Construct air permits and other crucial approvals.
