bp Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT) today announced a significant milestone with the safe delivery of first gas from its Mento development. This achievement marks the connection of the initial discovery well, paving the way for a comprehensive drilling campaign targeting the remaining seven gross wells on the platform.
The Mento development is a 50/50 joint venture between EOG Resources Trinidad Ltd (EOG) and bpTT, with EOG serving as the operator. This collaborative effort has brought online a 12-slot, attended facility situated in acreage jointly licensed by both companies off Trinidad鈥檚 southeast coast.
This successful start-up is a key component of bp's broader strategic vision, as Mento is one of 10 major projects globally anticipated to commence operations between 2025 and 2027. Earlier this year, bp highlighted these projects as central to its strategy for expanding its upstream activities. The production from Mento is expected to contribute substantially to the combined peak net production of 250,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed) projected from these 10 ventures.
A testament to local industry capabilities, the Mento platform was constructed at the TOFCO fabrication yard in La Brea, Trinidad.
bpTT president David Campbell expressed his pride in the accomplishment, stating, 鈥淚 am proud to announce first gas from Mento with our partner EOG Resources Trinidad Ltd. For bpTT, this represents our second start up this year and it is tangible proof of the benefits of partnering with others to bring much needed gas into production. The bpTT/EOG partnership is progressing well as we continue to work on our next joint venture project Coconut.鈥 Campbell's remarks highlight the strategic importance of partnerships in unlocking vital energy resources and the continued collaborative efforts between bpTT and EOG.
The delivery of first gas from Mento signifies a crucial step in bolstering Trinidad and Tobago's natural gas supply. As a key energy producer in the Caribbean, the continuous development of new gas fields is essential for sustaining domestic energy needs and supporting export markets. The Mento project's successful progression demonstrates the ongoing commitment of bpTT and EOG to investing in and developing the country's hydrocarbon resources.
Looking ahead, the commencement of the drilling campaign for the remaining seven wells on the Mento platform signals a period of sustained activity and increased production. This phased approach will systematically bring additional gas online, further enhancing the project's contribution to bp's global production targets and Trinidad and Tobago's energy landscape.
