Brenntag, the global leader in chemical and ingredient distribution, has inaugurated the world鈥檚 first CO2-emission-free chemical distribution site. Located in Traun, Austria, the site represents a significant step in the company鈥檚 sustainability journey and sets a new benchmark for energy-efficient operations in the chemical logistics industry.
The site underwent extensive modernization over the past several months to achieve carbon neutrality. Brenntag invested more than 1.5 million euros in a comprehensive, holistic energy upgrade. Key improvements include thermal renovations of buildings, advanced control systems for acid and alkali tank heating, a transition to groundwater heat pumps paired with low-temperature radiators, and the installation of an on-site photovoltaic system to power the facility.
The photovoltaic array, with an installed capacity of 220 kWp, is expected to generate approximately 220,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This output will fully meet the power needs of the site's heat pumps, rated at 73 kW and 110 kW, along with other operational and electric vehicle charging requirements. These upgrades collectively reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 120 metric tons per year鈥攃omparable to the average energy consumption of 50 households.
The inauguration ceremony, held on May 30, welcomed political and public stakeholders who praised the company鈥檚 investment in sustainability and industrial innovation in one of Europe鈥檚 key industrial hubs. The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony and site tours to highlight the technological advancements and environmental benefits of the transformation.
Brenntag considers the Traun site a 鈥渓ighthouse project,鈥 serving as a prototype for energy transformation across its global network of approximately 600 sites in over 70 countries. The initiative aligns with the company鈥檚 broader commitment to sustainability, a core component of its 鈥淪trategy to Win.鈥
The project also received financial support from the Brenntag Carbon Fund, which backs initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of Brenntag鈥檚 global operations.
鈥淭his project is much more than a technical success,鈥 said Andreas Kicherer, vice president of sustainability for the Brenntag Group. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a milestone in Brenntag鈥檚 strong commitment to sustainability and achieving climate neutrality by 2045. As a science-based company with a 150-year legacy, we understand what it means to think and act sustainably鈥攁nd we are delivering on that promise.鈥
With the Traun site now fully operational as a zero-emission facility, Brenntag sets a new precedent in chemical distribution and reinforces its role as a leader in driving sustainable industrial practices worldwide.
