Graphitic Energy, formerly known as C-Zero, has entered into a strategic collaboration with Technip Energies USA to advance and deploy its methane pyrolysis technology. The partnership, focused through Technip Energies鈥 Claremont, California, office, aims to scale up the production of clean hydrogen and solid carbon while avoiding direct CO2 emissions.

The proprietary methane pyrolysis process developed by Graphitic uses natural gas to generate clean hydrogen and synthetic graphite鈥攁 highly valuable form of carbon used in batteries, lubricants, refractories, and high-temperature industrial applications. The collaboration includes dedicated funding for testing and validation campaigns, with plans to establish a licensing agreement later this year to accelerate global adoption of the technology.

Graphitic鈥檚 process is energy-efficient and scalable, with the capability to produce up to 100,000 metric tons of hydrogen annually in a single process train. It does not rely on renewable electricity or carbon sequestration, offering greater geographic flexibility and cost efficiency. Moreover, the economics of the process are viable without government subsidies, allowing the company to profitably market both hydrogen and graphite at existing market prices.

Technip Energies brings deep expertise in hydrogen generation and fluidized bed technologies to the partnership. 鈥淭echnip Energies is excited to collaborate with Graphitic Energy, leveraging our global experience to standardize hydrogen and synthetic graphite plants with minimal direct CO2 emissions,鈥 said Mario Tommaselli, senior vice president of gas and low-carbon energies at Technip Energies. 鈥淭his partnership supports our commitment to cost-effective, sustainable energy solutions.鈥

Standardized plant designs resulting from the collaboration are expected to reduce capital costs, speed up implementation, and improve predictability of project economics.

Graphitic commissioned its pilot plant in March 2025 in San Antonio, capable of 24/7 operation. The facility produces several hundred kilograms of hydrogen and up to 1,000 kilograms of solid carbon per day. The plant is expected to remain operational through the end of the year and serves as a key step toward full-scale commercialization.

鈥淕raphitic's technology produces two vital materials from natural gas,鈥 said Zach Jones, co-founder and CEO of Graphitic. 鈥淲e鈥檝e progressed from lab-scale experiments to a full pilot plant. Partnering with Technip Energies will accelerate our path to market and allow us to offer high-quality engineering packages to partners worldwide.鈥

Graphitic鈥檚 progress is backed by a $15 million extension of its Series A funding round, bringing total investment to more than $65 million.
