The world鈥檚 first large-scale commercial e-methanol production facility, located in Kass酶, Aabenraa, Denmark, has officially been inaugurated and has begun supplying low-carbon fuel to leading global companies.

Developed by European Energy in partnership with Mitsui & Co., the facility is owned by Solar Park Kass酶 ApS, a subsidiary of Kass酶 MidCo ApS. European Energy holds a 51% stake in the project, with Mitsui owning the remaining 49%.

The facility supplies e-methanol to major industry players, including A.P. Moller 鈥� Maersk, the LEGO Group, and Novo Nordisk. These companies are united in their commitment to adopting low-emission solutions in their operations.

With an annual production capacity of 42,000 metric tons, the Kass酶 facility is the first in the world to manufacture e-methanol at commercial scale. The plant runs entirely on renewable energy and is located next to the 304-megawatt Kass酶 Solar Park, the largest solar park in Northern Europe. The facility integrates large-scale renewable electricity generation with carbon capture and utilization technology.

Using biogenic carbon dioxide combined with green hydrogen produced on-site, the facility creates e-methanol with up to 97% lower carbon emissions compared to conventional fossil-based methanol. The fuel is intended to support decarbonization in sectors that are difficult to electrify.

Maersk will utilize e-methanol from the Kass酶 facility to fuel the *Laura M忙rsk*, the world鈥檚 first container ship powered by methanol. The fuel will also be used in industrial applications, including plastics manufacturing, where it will replace traditional fossil-based methanol.

The LEGO Group intends to use renewable e-methanol in the manufacturing of specific components, such as cross axles and connectors, while ensuring the same standards of safety and durability. Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk will integrate e-methanol into the production of select products as part of its broader efforts to lower supply chain emissions.

Mitsui has played a key strategic role in advancing the project and expanding its international presence, in line with the company鈥檚 Global Energy Transition strategy. The partnership with European Energy is aimed at scaling Power-to-X technologies and promoting low-emission alternatives in hard-to-abate industries.
