Lyten Starts U.S. Production of Battery-Grade Lithium-Metal to Boost Domestic Supply Chain

Lyten, a leader in advanced supermaterials and lithium-sulfur battery technology, has commenced U.S. production of battery-grade lithium-metal foil using domestically sourced lithium alloys and lithium-metal. This achievement marks the first such production of its kind in the U.S. and represents a critical advancement in localizing the battery supply chain. With a fully domestic sulfur cathode supply already established, Lyten is now progressing toward full domestic production of its lithium-metal anode. The result is a resilient, tariff-free battery supply chain.
Lyten鈥檚 ultra-lightweight lithium-sulfur batteries are designed for a wide range of applications, including electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage, drones, satellites, micromobility, and defense. The company鈥檚 domestic milestone aligns with ongoing federal initiatives aimed at boosting domestic production of critical materials and reducing reliance on overseas suppliers鈥攅specially China, which currently dominates the global battery and mineral processing market.
Co-founder and CEO Dan Cook emphasized Lyten鈥檚 commitment to reshaping the U.S. battery landscape, stating, 鈥淭o build a robust U.S. battery industry, we must address the supply chain. Our lithium-sulfur chemistry eliminates the need for nickel, manganese, cobalt, and graphite鈥攎inerals that often pose sourcing and environmental challenges鈥攁llowing us to focus on local lithium production. Lyten is positioned to be the only U.S. battery maker free from tariffs and critical minerals risk.鈥
Lyten鈥檚 lithium-sulfur technology leverages abundant and environmentally friendly materials. Sulfur, used in the cathode, is readily available as a byproduct from various global industries such as oil and gas, mining, and chemical manufacturing. While lithium resources are widespread in the U.S., the domestic capacity to process battery-grade lithium has been minimal鈥攕omething Lyten aims to change.
According to Celina Mikolajczak, Lyten鈥檚 Chief Battery Technology Officer, 鈥淒esigning and processing our own lithium-metal alloys and foils places us at the forefront of next-gen U.S. battery manufacturing.鈥
To that end, Lyten has begun producing proprietary Lithium Alloys in partnership with Creative Engineers, Inc. in Pennsylvania. The lithium-metal feedstock is sourced from the Eastern U.S., while the conversion of these alloys into lithium-metal foils occurs at Lyten鈥檚 San Jose, California facility. These foils are then integrated into Lyten鈥檚 lithium-sulfur battery production lines.
Additionally, Lyten is producing NDAA-compliant cells and expanding operations through the acquisition of Northvolt鈥檚 San Leandro battery plant. Backed by a $650 million LOI from the U.S. Export-Import Bank, Lyten is scaling up production for energy storage systems and has announced collaborations with Chrysler, AEVEX Aerospace, and NASA for future deployments, including a demonstration aboard the ISS in 2025.
