Marubeni Corporation, one of Japan鈥檚 preeminent trading houses, and Envision Energy, a global leader in green technology, have announced a historic long-term offtake agreement for green ammonia produced in Inner Mongolia, China. This pioneering deal marks a significant milestone in the global transition to clean energy, validating the commercial viability of green ammonia as a scalable energy solution.

The agreement solidifies Marubeni鈥檚 position as a key supplier in the nascent green ammonia market and underscores the immense potential of green hydrogen-ammonia energy across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. By combining Envision Energy鈥檚 innovative leadership in integrated green hydrogen-ammonia solutions with Marubeni鈥檚 expansive global network and deep expertise in energy trade, the partnership aims to facilitate the large-scale production and widespread commercialization of green ammonia.

This collaboration is set to fast-track the global transition to low-carbon energy solutions, particularly benefiting industries such as chemicals and fertilizers by driving sustainable growth worldwide. For Japan, the agreement will accelerate its shift to a green economy, stimulate greater investment and innovation, and directly support the government鈥檚 ambitious sustainability goals.

Frank Yu, Senior Vice President of Envision Energy, highlighted the importance of the partnership. 鈥淭he global energy landscape is undergoing profound changes, with hydrogen-ammonia playing an increasingly pivotal role,鈥 he stated. 鈥淭ogether with Marubeni, we are accelerating the commercialization of ammonia, turning it into a key energy solution that powers the world鈥檚 transition to carbon-neutral fuels. This partnership lays the groundwork for ammonia-powered transportation and electricity generation, ultimately fostering a cleaner and more sustainable energy ecosystem.鈥

Marubeni confirmed that it will off-take a certain volume of green ammonia produced at Envision鈥檚 plant in Inner Mongolia on a long-term basis, subsequently supplying it to its diverse clientele. This project represents the Marubeni Group鈥檚 first long-term offtake agreement specifically for green ammonia.

Green ammonia, which boasts zero CO2 emissions during its production process, is increasingly recognized for its versatile applications. It is expected to serve as a vital chemical and fertilizer feedstock and a critical energy source for decarbonization across various industries. Envision Energy, renowned for its advancements in green technology, plans to commence trial production of green ammonia using wind-generated electricity in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, in 2024. The company鈥檚 commercial green ammonia plants are slated to begin operations from late 2025 onwards. With an initial production capacity of 300,000 tons per year, this project is poised to become the world鈥檚 first large-scale green ammonia production facility.
