McDermott has successfully completed the fabrication, construction, and offshore floatover of the Scarborough floating production unit (FPU) topside and hull structures for Woodside Energy, marking a significant milestone in the Scarborough Energy Project. The contract, awarded in 2021 after McDermott delivered the front-end engineering design, covers engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) services for the project.

The company is responsible for the design, fabrication, integration, transportation, and installation of the approximately 30,000-metric-ton topside and 37,000-metric-ton hull structures. This project represents McDermott鈥檚 largest floating production facility design and build to date, and one of the largest semi-submersible production platforms ever constructed offshore.

Fabrication of the topsides was completed at McDermott鈥檚 joint venture yard, Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan (QMW), in Qingdao, China. Meanwhile, the hull was built by COSCO at its shipyard in Qidong, China. The topsides consist of six deck levels and include 169 core equipment units. These units feature three gas turbine-driven export gas compressors and three main generators equipped with waste heat recovery systems. Additionally, the topside incorporates more than 50,000 meters of piping, one million meters of cabling, and 568 integrated subsystems. A battery energy storage system is also part of the design, aimed at supporting operational emissions reduction.

Earlier this month, both the hull and topside structures were transported offshore. The topside was successfully installed onto the hull via a floatover operation off the coast of Dalian, China. Following this critical step, the completed FPU moved to CIMC鈥檚 Raffles yard in Yantai, China, where final integration work is underway.

Once complete, the FPU is scheduled to sail to Western Australia. It will be positioned approximately 375 kilometers offshore from the Burrup Peninsula at the Scarborough gas field. This floating production facility will play a key role in Woodside Energy鈥檚 efforts to develop the Scarborough gas resource.

This milestone reflects McDermott鈥檚 continued capability and leadership in delivering complex offshore infrastructure projects. The successful floatover of the Scarborough FPU highlights the company鈥檚 expertise in managing large-scale, technically challenging projects across global locations.
