A significant oil leak near the western Libyan city of Zawiya has led to the suspension of operations at the Hamada oil field, according to a statement released on Saturday by Libya鈥檚 National Oil Corporation (NOC). The incident occurred along the southern section of the crude oil pipeline connected to the Zawiya terminal. In response, the NOC promptly halted oil production from the Hamada field as a precautionary measure to manage the pressure in the pipeline system. Although the Zawiya facility itself remains operational, flow from the Hamada site has been temporarily suspended to limit the impact of the leak and facilitate emergency response efforts.

The NOC reported that technical teams were immediately dispatched to the site to address the situation. These specialized crews are currently working to contain the spill, prevent further environmental harm, and carry out the necessary pipeline repairs. An official investigation has also been launched to identify the root cause of the rupture. While the exact extent of the environmental damage has not yet been fully assessed, the NOC noted that proactive steps have been implemented to mitigate any serious consequences to the surrounding area. Measures such as shutting down the affected pipeline segment and mobilizing rapid response units are part of the effort to limit the leak鈥檚 reach and environmental impact.

Environmental concerns have been heightened as a result of the leak, with the NOC acknowledging the potential threats posed to nearby ecosystems. Nevertheless, the corporation emphasized that swift containment actions were taken to address the issue as efficiently as possible. The company reaffirmed its commitment to safety and environmental protection while assuring the public that every effort is being made to resolve the matter swiftly.

This incident highlights the fragility of Libya鈥檚 oil infrastructure, which continues to suffer from years of conflict, political instability, and a lack of consistent investment. Despite being home to Africa鈥檚 largest proven oil reserves, Libya鈥檚 energy sector remains susceptible to technical failures and disruptions due to outdated infrastructure and maintenance challenges. The country has faced repeated interruptions in oil production over the past decade, largely due to security issues and infrastructural degradation.

The NOC has not provided a timeline for the resumption of production at the Hamada field, stating that operations will remain suspended until the pipeline is fully secured and deemed safe. As repairs and environmental assessments continue, the disruption is expected to affect Libya鈥檚 overall oil output, further underlining the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades and long-term investment in the country鈥檚 energy sector.
