RTI Opens $14M Pilot Facility to Accelerate Clean-Tech Scale-Up

RTI International expanded its Pilot Xcelerator with a $14 million facility to help innovators validate and commercialize advanced energy technologies.

RTI International has inaugurated a $14 million expansion of its Pilot Xcelerator, strengthening its capabilities to help emerging energy and industrial technologies progress from laboratory concepts to commercial-scale applications. The independent scientific research institute said the expanded platform is designed to address one of the major challenges faced by 鈥渢ough-tech鈥 innovators: proving that promising technologies can operate reliably and economically at pilot scale before committing to large commercial investments.

Located at RTI鈥檚 campus in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, the new 25,000-square-foot facility doubles the organization鈥檚 commercialization infrastructure. It provides startups, established companies and government partners with access to pilot-scale equipment, engineering capabilities, independent scientific validation and commercialization expertise. These resources are intended to generate real-world operating data, improve technology performance and reduce the technical and financial risks associated with scaling new processes.

RTI President and CEO Tim J. Gabel said the expansion reflects the institute鈥檚 commitment to moving breakthrough technologies from research laboratories into commercial markets while supporting innovation and economic growth in North Carolina and beyond.

The Pilot Xcelerator is particularly significant because pilot infrastructure can be expensive and technically complex for early-stage companies to develop independently. By providing shared facilities and engineering support, RTI enables innovators to test technologies under realistic operating conditions without making the substantial upfront investment required to establish their own pilot plants.

The platform also extends beyond technical testing. RTI assists companies with independent performance validation, market analysis and deployment planning, helping innovators build the evidence required to attract investors, secure commercial partnerships and advance toward full-scale projects.

The expanded facility will support technologies across several emerging sectors, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), carbon capture, critical minerals, advanced plastics recycling, sustainable chemicals and industrial biotechnology.

Among the companies using the Pilot Xcelerator is Syzygy Plasmonics, which demonstrated a process that reforms carbon dioxide and methane to produce low-carbon aviation fuel and is now progressing toward a commercial plant. CarbonBridge is preparing to test a bioprocess that uses microbes to convert methane into methanol, potentially transforming waste greenhouse gases into useful fuels and chemicals.

Aether Fuels is demonstrating technology that converts waste carbon feedstocks into SAF, while Lydian Labs has successfully demonstrated a power-to-liquids process combining captured carbon dioxide, water and renewable electricity to produce SAF. Lydian is targeting a commercial-scale demonstration facility in 2027, followed by full-scale production by 2030.

Impact on Chemical Commodity Prices

The expansion could accelerate commercial deployment of sustainable aviation fuel, methanol, carbon-capture, recycled plastics, critical-mineral and low-carbon chemical technologies by providing innovators with pilot-scale validation and operational data. In the near term, the impact on chemical commodity prices is likely to remain limited because the facility itself does not immediately create significant commercial production capacity. However, successful scale-up could gradually increase demand for methanol, CO2, recycled polymers, specialty chemicals and related process inputs, potentially providing modest upward price support. Conversely, greater production of recycled and bio-based alternatives could create competitive pressure on conventional petrochemical products over the longer term, particularly in fuels and selected chemical markets.
