Topsoe and BioVeritas partnered to expand renewable fuel production using second-generation biomass feedstocks and existing refining infrastructure globally.
Topsoe and BioVeritas have entered into a strategic agreement aimed at accelerating the production of sustainable fuels and renewable chemicals through the use of second-generation biomass feedstocks. The collaboration combines Topsoe鈥檚 HydroFlex庐 technology with the BioVeritas Process鈩, creating a pathway for fuel producers to utilize waste-based biomass resources within existing refining infrastructure.
Under the agreement, fuel manufacturers will be able to license Topsoe鈥檚 HydroFlex庐 technology together with the BioVeritas Process鈩 to produce renewable fuels from non-food biomass feedstocks such as woody biomass, corn stover, wheat straw, and other agricultural residues and waste materials. The partnership is expected to broaden the range of viable feedstock options available for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel production, supporting the global transition toward lower-carbon energy systems.
The BioVeritas Process鈩 is designed to efficiently convert second-generation biomass feedstocks into specialized intermediates known as KEYTones鈩. These intermediates can then be processed using Topsoe鈥檚 HydroFlex庐 technology to generate renewable transportation fuels. By integrating the two technologies, the companies aim to provide fuel producers with a commercially practical solution that leverages existing infrastructure while enabling the use of advanced biomass resources that traditionally have been difficult to process economically.
According to company executives, the agreement represents a major step toward increasing feedstock flexibility in the renewable fuels sector. Yassir Ghiyati, Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, stated that the collaboration creates a significant opportunity to expand feedstock pathways that can help make more SAF and renewable fuel projects economically viable while also supporting wider global deployment of renewable fuel technologies. He highlighted that combining HydroFlex庐 with the BioVeritas Process鈩 could play an important role in enabling the industry to scale production and meet increasing demand for sustainable fuels.
Alan Del Paggio, Chief Commercial Officer at BioVeritas, emphasized that fuel producers are increasingly seeking solutions that can integrate seamlessly into existing refinery and fuel production infrastructure. He explained that the combination of the BioVeritas Process鈩 with Topsoe鈥檚 HydroFlex庐 technology provides a near-term and scalable pathway for incorporating second-generation feedstocks into renewable fuel production. He also noted that the collaboration could help customers unlock substantial new volumes of renewable fuel output while minimizing the need for major infrastructure changes.
The agreement comes at a time when global demand for sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel continues to rise rapidly. Expanding the feedstock base is considered essential for accelerating project development and meeting long-term decarbonization goals across the transportation and aviation industries. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), approximately 1,580 million tonnes of biomass feedstock could potentially be available for SAF production globally. If effective conversion technologies are implemented, this biomass supply could support the production of more than 300 million tonnes of SAF annually by 2050.
Topsoe鈥檚 HydroFlex庐 technology is capable of converting a wide range of materials, including plastics, fats, oils, and greases, into drop-in renewable jet fuel and renewable diesel that meet globally accepted fuel specifications. The technology can be deployed in new grassroots facilities as well as integrated into existing refineries through revamps for co-processing or fully renewable operations. Meanwhile, the BioVeritas Process鈩 enables new biomass streams to be transformed into KEYTones鈩, which can be processed within existing HEFA-based infrastructure either alongside or in place of traditional fats, oils, and greases.
The collaboration further strengthens Topsoe鈥檚 position as a leading provider of advanced energy transition technologies while highlighting the growing industry focus on scalable, waste-based feedstock solutions for future renewable fuel production.
