Turkey has discovered a new natural gas reserve in the Black Sea valued at approximately $30 billion, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Saturday, marking a significant step in the country鈥檚 ongoing efforts to bolster its energy independence.

Speaking at an event in Istanbul, Erdogan said the newly uncovered reserve contains an estimated 75 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The find was made during active drilling operations at the Goktepe-3 well, located at a depth of 3,500 meters.

鈥淲ith this discovery, we will be able to meet the natural gas needs of households in Turkey for three and a half years,鈥 Erdogan said. 鈥淭his is a major stride in our goal of reducing our dependence on foreign energy and ensuring energy security for our nation.鈥

The announcement adds to Turkey鈥檚 growing list of energy discoveries in the Black Sea, where the country has invested heavily in exploration activities. The Sakarya gas field 鈥 Turkey鈥檚 flagship natural gas project in the region 鈥 has already reached a daily production level of 9.5 million cubic meters, according to officials. The latest find is expected to further enhance output and contribute significantly to the national energy grid in the coming years.

Turkey currently imports more than 90% of its energy needs, a dependence that places a considerable burden on the country鈥檚 economy, especially during periods of global price volatility. In recent years, Ankara has made energy independence a strategic priority, accelerating domestic exploration efforts and forging new international energy partnerships.

The government has focused heavily on maximizing its offshore potential, particularly in the Black Sea and eastern Mediterranean regions. Turkey鈥檚 state-run energy companies have invested in advanced drilling technologies, while the government has streamlined regulatory frameworks to support long-term development in the sector.

鈥淲e are determined to transform Turkey into an energy-producing nation rather than one that simply consumes,鈥 Erdogan said. 鈥淓very new reserve we discover strengthens our hand in global energy diplomacy and enhances our national sovereignty.鈥

In addition to reducing import reliance, the government expects domestic gas production to help stabilize energy prices and protect consumers from external shocks. Plans are underway to connect the newly discovered reserves to the national pipeline system, allowing for gradual integration into Turkey鈥檚 broader energy infrastructure.

The new find at Goktepe-3 follows a series of discoveries made since 2020, which have collectively raised optimism about the country鈥檚 long-term energy outlook. Analysts say continued exploration and efficient development of these reserves could significantly reduce Turkey鈥檚 energy import bill and improve its geopolitical standing in the region.
