United Energy Group (UEG), a global leader in renewable energy solutions, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Alexandria Fertilizers Co. (AlexFert), one of Egypt鈥檚 leading producers of nitrogen-based fertilizers, to jointly develop a project focused on the production of green ammonia from green hydrogen. The initiative marks a significant step toward cleaner industrial practices and supports Egypt鈥檚 broader decarbonization goals.
The project will utilize renewable energy to produce green hydrogen, which will then serve as a feedstock for green ammonia production鈥攔eplacing conventional, fossil fuel-based methods. Under the agreement, UEG will take the lead in developing the green hydrogen facility, which will be located near AlexFert鈥檚 existing production plants in Alexandria. This strategic location allows for integration with existing infrastructure, creating operational efficiencies and minimizing environmental impact.
鈥淲e are pleased to collaborate with AlexFert on this groundbreaking initiative,鈥 said Joe Xiaodong, UEG vice president and general manager of green hydrogen. 鈥淭his partnership combines our expertise in green hydrogen technologies with AlexFert鈥檚 longstanding industrial presence. Together, we aim to establish new benchmarks for sustainable energy production and make a meaningful contribution to the global transition toward a low-carbon economy.鈥
The partnership supports Egypt鈥檚 national development agenda, including its Vision 2030 strategy, which emphasizes sustainability and energy diversification. By introducing green hydrogen into the industrial sector, the initiative enhances Egypt鈥檚 position as an emerging energy hub while promoting long-term environmental and economic benefits.
鈥淭his project aligns perfectly with our vision to lead in sustainable energy solutions,鈥 said Kamel Al-Sawi, president of United Energy Egypt. 鈥淥ur collaboration with AlexFert is not only about advancing cleaner technologies but also about reinforcing Egypt鈥檚 strategic role in the global energy transition. We are proud to be part of a project that reflects our shared commitment to decarbonization and industrial innovation.鈥
AlexFert, a subsidiary of Egypt Kuwait Holding Co. (EKH), operates three fertilizer plants in Alexandria, producing ammonia, urea and ammonium sulfate. The company has taken steps in recent years to integrate cleaner energy into its operations, and this project marks a significant milestone in that journey.
鈥淲e are proud to work with UEG on this transformative green ammonia project,鈥 said Alaa El-Banna, CEO of AlexFert. 鈥淎s a reliable producer and exporter of nitrogen fertilizers, this initiative allows us to lead the transition toward more sustainable production methods without compromising our operational excellence or market presence.鈥
Jon Rokk, CEO of EKH, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the strategic value of the partnership. 鈥淭his collaboration is a reflection of EKH鈥檚 ongoing commitment to sustainable industrial innovation,鈥 Rokk said. 鈥淓xpanding into low-carbon and circular energy solutions is a natural evolution for us, and green ammonia represents a pivotal component of that vision.鈥
By combining advanced clean energy technologies with established industrial infrastructure, the UEG-AlexFert partnership serves as a model for sustainable development and a blueprint for the future of green manufacturing in the region.
