Consumers Energy is significantly enhancing its ability to deliver reliable energy to Michigan residents with the ongoing expansion of its natural gas plant in Zeeland. The company announced that the project, slated for completion by mid-June, is a crucial component of its broader Reliability Roadmap.

This proactive investment in the Zeeland facility underscores Consumers Energy's long-standing commitment to providing dependable, affordable, and flexible energy solutions to communities across Michigan. As the summer peak generation period approaches and electricity demand continues to grow, this expansion will play a vital role in ensuring a consistent power supply for the company's 6.8 million customers in the Lower Peninsula.

"This expansion of our Zeeland facility represents a significant step forward in our unwavering commitment to energy reliability for Michigan," stated Norm Kapala, vice president of generation operations at Consumers Energy. "We recognize that the demand for electricity is constantly changing, and we are taking decisive action to guarantee our customers can count on dependable energy, around the clock, especially as our communities continue to expand."

The expansion project at the Zeeland plant focuses on increasing the generation capacity of the already highly efficient natural gas facility through the integration of cutting-edge technology. Key upgrades include the installation of an Advanced Gas Path (AGP) system, designed to significantly boost both power output and fuel efficiency. Additionally, an Advanced Fuel System (AFS) is being implemented to provide more precise control over fuel mixture, further optimizing the plant's performance.

These technological advancements will empower the turbines at the Zeeland plant to generate an additional 50 megawatts of electricity for Michigan consumers. Furthermore, the upgrades are projected to improve the plant's fuel efficiency by 2.5%, allowing for greater output while adhering to existing annual emission limits. The enhanced responsiveness of the upgraded turbines will also enable the plant to adapt more swiftly to fluctuations in energy demand.

"This investment transcends mere power generation; it is a direct investment in the future prosperity of Michigan," added Kapala. "We are actively building a stronger, smarter energy grid that will not only safeguard our communities but also provide a solid foundation for our state's continued economic growth."

Consumers Energy emphasizes that meeting the electric needs of its customers remains its top priority. The expansion of the Zeeland plant is part of a larger strategy that includes significant investments in infrastructure to ensure reliable energy delivery. This strategy also encompasses the ongoing maintenance of the Jackson Generating Station, the recent acquisition of the Covert Generating Station, and the continued operation of the Karn 3 and 4 combined cycle units.
