Doosan Enerbility announced May 25 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Korea Western Power Co. to jointly develop 90-megawatt hydrogen turbines and promote their deployment in both domestic and international markets.

The MOU was signed during a ceremony held May 22 at Doosan Enerbility鈥檚 headquarters in Changwon, South Korea. The event was attended by senior executives from both companies, including Jung Yeon-in, vice chairman of Doosan Enerbility, and Lee Jung-bok, president of Korea Western Power, as well as other company officials.

Under the agreement, Doosan Enerbility will focus on the technological development of mid-sized hydrogen power turbines and the manufacturing of related components. The company brings expertise in turbine design, engineering, and production. Korea Western Power will be responsible for implementing these turbines at new power generation sites and conducting on-site demonstration tests to assess and validate performance.

The collaboration aims to support South Korea鈥檚 national energy strategy, which includes significantly increasing the share of clean hydrogen in power generation. The two companies intend to contribute to building a stable hydrogen power generation infrastructure while advancing innovation in hydrogen turbine technology.

An important aspect of the partnership is its emphasis on fostering collaboration with small and medium-sized domestic enterprises. By working with local companies, Doosan Enerbility and Korea Western Power hope to strengthen the national hydrogen energy supply chain and enhance the competitiveness of Korean hydrogen technology on a global scale.

鈥淭his partnership will enable us to secure core capabilities in hydrogen turbine technology and establish a foundation for stable hydrogen power in Korea,鈥 said Jung, vice chairman of Doosan Enerbility. 鈥淲e also intend to accelerate the global expansion of our hydrogen turbine business and actively pursue opportunities in international markets.鈥

Hydrogen turbines are considered a critical zero-carbon power generation technology, and Doosan Enerbility has positioned itself as a leader in this field. The company is developing both mid-sized (90MW) and large-scale (400MW) hydrogen turbines, with a target to complete both models by 2028.

Doosan Enerbility has been at the forefront of hydrogen power innovation, leveraging its experience in conventional turbine systems and adapting them for clean energy applications. The successful development of these turbines would not only support Korea鈥檚 transition to a low-carbon economy but also position the country as a key player in the global hydrogen market.

Through this MOU, Doosan Enerbility and Korea Western Power aim to demonstrate the commercial viability of hydrogen turbines and contribute to the global push toward carbon neutrality and sustainable energy solutions.
