On May 20, 2025, hte GmbH and Heraeus Precious Metals entered a research and development service agreement to collaborate on advancing catalytic ammonia cracking technologies. The partnership focuses on screening catalyst materials for the efficient conversion of ammonia into hydrogen鈥攁 crucial step in supporting global sustainability and clean energy initiatives.
To facilitate this process, hte employed its state-of-the-art, high-throughput testing system to evaluate a wide range of catalyst candidates under challenging industrial conditions. The system enabled simultaneous testing of 16 materials at elevated temperatures exceeding 700 degrees Celsius and under mid-range pressures. These rigorous conditions simulate real-world industrial scenarios, ensuring the results are relevant for commercial applications.
Hydrogen plays a vital role in achieving climate targets, but its efficient transport remains a challenge. Ammonia is increasingly viewed as a viable carrier for green hydrogen due to its higher energy density and established infrastructure. However, releasing hydrogen from ammonia requires effective catalytic cracking鈥攁 process in which Heraeus鈥檚 expertise in precious metals and custom catalyst design is proving instrumental.
The high-throughput technology at hte allowed rapid screening of catalyst formulations with precision and consistency. Through a fully automated, digitally integrated workflow, experiments were conducted and analyzed in real time, enabling the collection of reliable data at unprecedented speed and scale. This accelerated approach allowed Heraeus Precious Metals to identify a highly effective ruthenium-based catalyst, noted for its performance and stability under industrial conditions.
鈥淥ur goal was to develop a catalyst that performs reliably in demanding environments,鈥 said Ingo Gr盲f, global head of innovation chemicals at Heraeus Precious Metals. 鈥淭hanks to hte鈥檚 advanced testing capabilities, we鈥檝e succeeded in launching a high-performing and stable ruthenium catalyst that will make ammonia cracking more efficient and sustainable鈥攁n important step toward a hydrogen-based economy.鈥
Heraeus Precious Metals contributed its deep knowledge of precious-metal precursors and decades of experience in catalyst development to the project. This expertise ensured the rapid selection and optimization of candidates with exceptional activity and selectivity, while upholding the highest safety and quality standards in metal processing.
鈥淭he development of sustainable hydrogen solutions is a priority for industries worldwide,鈥 said Markus Bold, CEO of hte. 鈥淥ur collaboration with Heraeus exemplifies how digitalized R&D and high-throughput testing can accelerate innovation. We are proud to support this pivotal work and look forward to future projects together.鈥
This joint effort marks a significant milestone in enabling the use of ammonia as a sustainable hydrogen carrier, advancing both partners鈥 missions to drive innovation in clean energy.
