OPAL Fuels, a leading producer of renewable natural gas (RNG), and Republic Services, Inc, a prominent environmental services provider, announced a joint venture to develop a new biogas-to-RNG production facility at Republic’s Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill in Concord, North Carolina.

The partnership will see the construction of a state-of-the-art RNG facility with an initial annual design capacity of approximately 1.4 million MMBtu. This project marks a strategic conversion of an existing renewable electricity facility already owned by OPAL at the landfill site. As part of the agreement, the joint venture, with OPAL as the majority owner and a Republic Services affiliate as a minority partner, has secured a new long-term gas rights agreement for the upcoming RNG plant.

OPAL Fuels has already invested in the initial stages of the facility's construction, and the project is anticipated to become operational in line with typical timelines for RNG development projects. The facility will employ established and effective technology to capture the biomethane naturally generated from the decomposition of organic waste within the landfill. This captured biogas will then be processed and upgraded into RNG, a versatile and low-carbon fuel source suitable for transportation and other applications.

Jonathan Maurer, co-CEO of OPAL Fuels, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "This facility further advances OPAL Fuels’ positioning as a leader in the development, operation, and distribution of RNG that provides a sustainable and cost-effective fuel solution for fleets. We appreciate increased collaboration with best-in-class partners as we continue to bring cost-effective solutions for partners, fleet customers, and the local communities they serve."

The joint venture underscores the growing commitment of both OPAL Fuels and Republic Services to advancing sustainable energy solutions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By converting landfill gas into a valuable renewable fuel, the project will not only mitigate the environmental impact of landfill operations but also contribute to the supply of cleaner energy alternatives. RNG produced at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill can be utilized as a direct substitute for conventional natural gas in various applications, including powering natural gas vehicle fleets, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering transportation-related emissions.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote the circular economy by capturing and repurposing resources that would otherwise be wasted. Landfill gas, a natural byproduct of waste decomposition, can be transformed from an environmental concern into a valuable energy resource through projects like this. The collaboration between OPAL Fuels, with its expertise in RNG project development and operation, and Republic.
