SwitcH2, a renewable energy company specializing in green ammonia production, is advancing towards the final design of its pioneering 300 MW offshore floating ammonia project with the support of a new investor. The chemical engineering and construction company JORD has joined SwitcH2鈥檚 shareholder base, signing an investment agreement that further strengthens the company鈥檚 financial and technical backing. JORD joins existing investors BW Offshore and Dutch Oceans Capital in supporting the innovative floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) technology for green ammonia production.

As part of the agreement, JORD鈥檚 subsidiary JOGS will play a crucial role in refining the final design of SwitcH2鈥檚 flagship offshore project. By leveraging its extensive experience in chemical engineering and large-scale construction, JORD will help optimize the project鈥檚 efficiency and technical capabilities. The FPSO-based approach will enable the production of green ammonia in offshore environments, offering a flexible and scalable solution for the global clean energy transition.

鈥淲e are very pleased to tap into JORD鈥檚 wealth of chemical engineering and construction expertise,鈥 said Saskia Kunst, Managing Director and Co-Founder of SwitcH2. 鈥淥ur shareholder base now consists of strategically aligned partners with complementary skills and knowledge in the renewable energy sector. Together, we are working toward securing the final investment decision (FID) for our first project in the near future.鈥

The project, based in Portugal, will integrate advanced renewable energy technologies, including Ohmium鈥檚 proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer technology, ThyssenKrupp鈥檚 ammonia synthesis process, and ABB鈥檚 electrical and control systems. The floating facility will utilize nearshore wind and solar power to generate green hydrogen, which will then be converted into ammonia directly onboard. This ammonia will be shipped to consumers in Portugal and key European ports in the Benelux region, strengthening the continent鈥檚 green energy supply chain.

In late 2024, SwitcH2 expanded its renewable energy capabilities by partnering with Swedish company CorPower Ocean to integrate wave energy into its power mix. This collaboration aims to further enhance the project鈥檚 sustainability and energy independence by incorporating an additional renewable energy source into the green ammonia production process.

Upon completion, the floating production unit is expected to generate approximately 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which will be converted into nearly 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia. This volume is sufficient to fuel multiple oceangoing vessels for an entire year, demonstrating the project鈥檚 potential to decarbonize the maritime sector and industrial applications.

Supported by the Dutch government and having received approval in principle (AiP) from classification society DNV, the project is on track to begin commercial green ammonia production by 2029. With this initiative, SwitcH2 is positioning itself as a leader in offshore renewable energy, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to drive the global transition toward sustainable fuels.
